American Museum of Natural History, Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation

Scope/Solutions

Designed by architect Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang Architects and set into the Columbus Avenue side of the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) complex, the Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation (Gilder Center) includes new exhibition and learning spaces with state‑of-the-art technology and world-class collections. At a time of urgent need to enhance the public understanding of science, the Gilder Center expands access to a broader range of AMNH’s resources for students, teachers, and families, offering new learning opportunities and inviting visitors to share in the excitement of discovery. SGH consulted on fire life safety code requirements for the project.

SGH assisted the design team in developing fire life safety strategies for the project. Highlights of our work include:

  • Proposing strategies to address the atrium and interconnected levels
  • Evaluating stair capacities and proposed stair locations
  • Helping design protection for structural and architectural components
  • Reviewing existing egress drawings to understand how the new addition will affect the existing approach
  • Coordinating with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineers regarding fire life safety requirements and smoke control systems
  • Preparing and delivering a report summarizing the applicable fire life safety requirements of the New York City Building Code
