Scope/Solutions

The Hoosac Wind Project is located in the mountains of Western Massachusetts. The project includes nineteen 1.5 MW wind turbines consisting of a steel tower supported by 45 ft dia. reinforced-concrete mat foundations. During construction, the contractor identified issues with understrength concrete and retained SGH to investigate the problems, identify solutions, and assist with dispute resolution.

SGH performed the following work for the project:

  • Performed finite-element analyses of as-constructed foundations to confirm adequacy with lower-than-specified concrete strength and avoid costly retrofit
  • Performed petrographic examination of concrete cylinders to determine possible causes of understrength concrete
  • Reviewed concrete mix-design submittals and quality assurance test results to identify flaws in either process that could have contributed to understrength concrete
  • Prepared an expert report and testified at an arbitration, and successfully assisted the contractor in recovering costs due to delays

FloDesign Wind Turbine

SGH was responsible for the design and analysis of the wind turbine. In particular, we designed the FRP shroud, the internal steel support structure, parts of mechanical components, the tower, and the foundation. We also oversaw fabrication, assembly, and erection of the turbine.

Overhead Transmission Line

Working for the contractor, SGH investigated the extent of the defects, evaluated the structural adequacy of the drilled shafts, designed temporary excavation support systems and concrete repairs, observed the repair work, and performed a root-cause analysis of the defects.
