Scope/Solutions
The National Historic Landmark District of Columbia State Historic Park is a mid-nineteenth-century gold rush town that has been in varying degrees of continuous use since the town’s inception. It retains a high level of integrity and historic significance. California State Parks retained SGH to write historic structure reports on numerous brick buildings, which suffered from brick deterioration, moisture problems, and structural movement.
SGH surveyed twenty-three buildings, including a hotel, a school, restaurants and bars, a bank, retail shops, and an assembly hall. We prepared historic structure reports that include the history of the property, construction history, architectural evaluations, existing conditions assessments, maintenance requirements, proposed work, and medium format archival photographs. For this project, SGH completed the following:
- Surveyed the exterior and interior condition of the buildings, including brick walls, wood- and steel-framed windows, wood and glass doors, metal shutters and bifold doors, ornamental iron railings, brick sidewalks, and wood boardwalks
- Performed field moisture content surveys to verify the source and extent of water and moisture infiltration
- Evaluated architectural, character-defining elements
- Recommended preservation, rehabilitation, and maintenance of the buildings within the historic district

Thornton Natatorium
The north masonry exterior wall of the natatorium was experiencing severe efflorescence and while the relative humidity in the natatorium was low, condensation was occurring in the exterior walls. SGH investigated the cause of the building enclosure issues.
