Edison Career & Technical High School

Scope/Solutions

The Edison Career and Technical High School was constructed in 1977 with post-tensioned waffle and flat plate concrete slabs. The school has experienced multiple post-tensioning strand failures dating back to 1983. SGH evaluated the condition of the building’s enclosure and post-tensioned concrete structure, and provided repair recommendations.

Our investigation included:

  • Documenting the condition of representative post-tensioning strands in exploratory openings at low points of tendon trajectories, anchorage regions, slab edges, and expansion joints
  • Evaluating the condition of the building enclosure and identifying possible sources of water ingress into the post-tensioning tendons
  • Testing the strength of the existing concrete in our Applied Science & Research Center
  • Assessing the effectiveness of prior repair and retrofit efforts
  • Analyzing the structure’s existing capacity, with and without failed post-tensioning, and evaluating its ability to support the required loads

We identified damage to post-tensioning tendons primarily due to water infiltration and recommended structural and waterproofing repairs to address areas of immediate concern and long-term repairs to improve the building’s performance. SGH is currently designing repairs that will be implemented as part of a multi-year, multi-discipline modernization of the school.
