George Mason University, Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study

Scope/Solutions

The Krasnow Institute for Advanced Study is a neuroscience research facility on George Mason University campus. The institute houses a vivarium and modular laboratories where scientists research psychology and neurobiology to better understand mental health and neurological diseases. Seeking to expand the facility, the Krasnow Institute needed a building addition with limited floor vibration to protect sensitive laboratory equipment. SGH provided structural design and building enclosure consulting services for the three-story building addition.

The 29,000 sq ft, composite steel-framed structure features a two-story pedestrian corridor with an expansion joint that links the existing building to the new addition. Highlights of our work include the following:

  • Structural design in two phases using a design-build project delivery method
  • Design of a temporary exterior wall in Phase I in anticipation of the Phase 2 expansion
  • Vibration analysis to ensure the proper operation of sensitive laboratory equipment
  • Building enclosure design consulting
