Scope/Solutions
The King’s Beach seawall runs between the Town of Swampscott and the City of Lynn. The seawall was originally constructed in the early 1900s and has been repaired and modified many times. The portion of the seawall in Swampscott ranges from approximately 4 to 15 ft tall and was visibly deteriorated. SGH evaluated the condition of the seawall and developed a repair solution and construction documents.
SGH performed multiple site visits to assess the condition of the entire seawall. Since the town did not have any construction documents, SGH photographed the seawall to document the existing construction and develop drawings for the town’s record. We also coordinated with the Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation to review historical records, allowing us to obtain information about the seawall’s size and construction.
Using the information we collected in the field and during our document review, we analyzed the seawall and determined that the existing distress would affect its long-term durability. SGH designed repairs to extend the useful life of the seawall, including installing fiber reinforced polymer reinforcing bars, applying shotcrete, and protecting the existing movement joints. We developed detailed specifications that incorporated mockups to ensure the material performance and the skills of the contractor met the required standards.
