Lower Falls Pedestrian Bridge No. P40

Scope/Solutions

The structure is a former railroad bridge spanning the Charles River near Newton Lower Falls.  The Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) proposed to convert the abandoned railroad bridge to pedestrian use.  SGH evaluated the existing bridge structure and developed a rehabilitation plan.

SGH evaluated the condition of the two-span superstructure comprising two riveted steel built-up plate girders, steel cross bracing between girders, and timber railroad ties laid across the tops of the girders.  The substructures consist of two reinforced concrete abutments, one on each bank, and a reinforced concrete pier in the center of the river.  Our subconsultant performed an underwater inspection to verify that there were no indications of scour or substructure damage.

We designed a new timber deck and railings and prepared specifications for cleaning and painting the existing structure.  We also assisted DCR in coordinating the landscape design and environmental permitting of the new trails leading to the bridge, including presenting at multiple public information meetings.
