The Bread Loaf Mountain Campus of Middlebury College is the home of the Bread Loaf School of English, the Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference, and other summer programs run by the college. The campus consists of approximately forty historic wood-framed buildings constructed between the early 1800s and early 1900s. Prior to its acquisition by the college in the early 20th century, the campus was a summer resort. Most of the buildings are not winterized or heated.
SGH led a team that conducted a complete condition assessment of all the buildings, including interiors, exteriors, and building systems and structures. We developed a comprehensive condition assessment report and a rehabilitation plan to upgrade the various systems in keeping with the historic character of the buildings.
In a subsequent project, SGH developed a rehabilitation plan to prioritize and sequence the rehabilitation of all campus buildings over a multi-year period, which allowed the college to maintain all summer programs at full enrollment. We included construction cost estimates to assist the school in capital planning for the short-term and long-term rehabilitation needs of the campus.
