Scope/Solutions
Part of the university’s Center for Vaccine Research, the ten-story Biomedical Science Tower 3 (BST3) provides a collaborative work space to support research in the fields of biology, neurosciences, vaccines, regenerative medicine, and biomedical devices. The facility includes a regional biocontainment laboratory (RBL), Biosafety Level 2 and 3 laboratories, and a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy laboratory. SGH provided structural and building enclosure consulting services for the tower’s design.
SGH designed the structure for the new building, a two-story mechanical penthouse, and two pedestrians bridges that connect the tower to adjacent buildings. We also designed blast protection and anti-terrorism perimeter site protection for the RBL and a stainless‑steel framed pit in the basement to house the NMR laboratory.
As the building enclosure consultant, SGH worked with the design team to develop the custom curtain wall profiles for the building. We helped them develop details to transition between the various building enclosure components and integrate the building enclosure with the structural systems and waterproofing where the new pedestrian bridges connect to the tower.
