Yilport Puerto Bolívar Expansion

Scope/Solutions

Puerto Bolívar, located in one of the highest seismic areas in the world, is one of the largest ports for shipping fruits and seafood in the Americas. Yilport Holding invested in an expansion and modernization project to create a new terminal with modern infrastructure and equipment, and increase the port’s container handling capacity to 2.6 million 20 ft equivalent unit (TEU)/year. SGH provided peer review and value engineering services for a new 450 m container wharf at Berth 6 and a 12.2 hectare container yard.

SGH’s multidisciplinary work on this project included marine, structural, and civil engineering services. Highlights of our work include:

  • Providing guidance to rationalize the basis of design for the new wharf and container yard, including requirements based on current U.S. seismic design standards
  • Peer reviewing the container wharf and site development design, including the container yard layout, ground improvements, pavement design, and utilities layout
  • Recommending cost-saving modifications to the wharf deck framing, including refining precast beam shapes and sizes
  • Evaluating value engineering options for the container yard layout to improve operations and minimize potential conflict points due to anticipated terminal traffic
  • Optimizing the pavement structure by recommending a pavement analysis method per current standard practices
  • Developing alternative designs for container bases and runways for the rubber-tired gantry (RTG) cranes, resulting in significant project cost savings
