Northwestern University, Ryan Fieldhouse and Walter Athletics Center

Scope/Solutions

With the new Ryan Fieldhouse and Walter Athletics Center, Northwestern University consolidated its athletic facilities on the shore of Lake Michigan adjacent to some of the campus’s other sports fields and arenas. The field house contains Wilson Field, an indoor field for football, soccer, lacrosse, and other sports. Together, the two buildings provide 420,000 sq ft of space for training, sports medicine and wellness facilities, locker rooms, performance centers, and other spaces to support the university’s athletes. SGH provided construction phase monitoring services during installation of the below-grade waterproofing system at the center, which was constructed in an area with high water table.

SGH reviewed the below-grade waterproofing design to compare it with GCP Applied Technologies’ (GCP’s) specifications and helped the design team develop details to improve performance.

Working as a third-party inspector, SGH observed the installation of the below-grade waterproofing for general conformance with the construction documents and to verify the work met GCP’s requirements for obtaining the water tightness warranty. We inspected the following:

  • Condition of the substrate preparation prior to waterproofing installation
  • Waterproofing before and after concrete reinforcement and formwork installation
  • Areas where the waterproofing terminates at grade or integrates with other waterproofing systems

Minutes after erection, the joists on the south half of the roof collapsed. The structural steel fabricator hired SGH to determine the cause of the collapse and to conduct three-dimensional computer analyses of both the original and repaired structure.
