Puerto Baru

Scope/Solutions

Puerto Baru is developing a river port to support the economic activities and growth of the western region of Panama. As part of this effort, SGH was retained to perform a concept-level study to develop a multipurpose river terminal in El Cabrito, Provincia de Chiriquí, Panama. The terminal is proposed for a greenfield site with high seismicity and high tide fluctuations. When completed, the terminal will support a variety of cargos such as bulk (liquid and dry), general cargo (breakbulk), and containers, and will also include a dock for mini cruises.

SGH collaborated with the owner and their representative to identify the operational goals, develop project design criteria, propose options for the terminal layout, and prepare a set of concept-level drawings with material specifications to facilitate a high-level budgeting exercise. Highlights of our work include:

  • Developed basis of design for marine structures
  • Evaluated multiple marine structure configurations and phasing
  • Developed concept-level designs for a 500-m long multi-purpose wharf, a mini cruise dock, and mooring dolphins
  • Performed berthing and mooring analyses
  • Seismic analyses
  • Evaluated global stability of the shoreline
  • Prepared a preliminary bill of quantities (BOQ)

SGH helped the owner by evaluating advantages and disadvantages of multiple terminal layouts, considering anticipated operations and the regions’ future business needs.

Idaho National Laboratory, Advanced Test Reactor Building TRA-676

As part of the ATR Life Extension Project, Battelle Energy Alliance (BEA) considered installing batteries inside this structure to provide backup power to the reactor. SGH evaluated TRA-676 and designed strengthening for both TRA-676 and the pit.
