Scope/Solutions

San Diego Gas & Electric Company needed to replace and upgrade equipment at an existing data center, including automatic transfer switches (ATS), switchgear, and other related components, and wanted to suspend new emergency power cable trays from the roof structure. SGH provided structural engineering services to design new equipment pads and anchorage, evaluate existing structural elements for new loading, and design strengthening for this critical facility.

SGH collaborated with the data center consultant to understand the planned work, new structural components that would be needed, and how the existing structure would be affected. Highlights of our work include:

  • Examining existing construction drawings and surveying the building to verify and document the structural components
  • Reviewing equipment information, including size, weight, and anchorage requirements to plan the support and anchor locations
  • Designing reinforced concrete pads for new equipment, doweled anchorage from the new pads to the existing slab-on-grade, and anchors from the equipment into concrete pads
  • Evaluating the existing roof framing’s capacity to support the weight of new suspended electrical conduits
  • Designing strengthening of the existing roof structure to support increased loads
  • Providing structural drawings and construction administration support for the new concrete pads, equipment anchorage, and structural strengthening for submittal to the City for plan check
