John Ringling opened his private museum to the public in 1931, sharing the art he and his wife, Mable, collected during their travels. Currently managed by Florida State University, the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art needed more space to house the Asian art collection and related educational initiatives. The Center for Asian Art includes an addition and major renovation to the museum’s west wing galleries. SGH performed a condition assessment and evaluated thermal performance of the existing west wing enclosure. We also consulted on the building enclosure for the new addition clad with green terra-cotta.
SGH performed a condition assessment on the existing west wing and completed a building-code analysis for the exterior systems with proposed alterations. We performed hygrothermal modeling of the existing wall and roof systems to evaluate if they can accommodate temperature- and humidity-controlled museum spaces without condensation or deleterious effects to the systems. SGH recommended repairs for the architect to incorporate in their construction documents.
We also consulted on the building enclosure design for the new addition, including strategies for separating the humidified art spaces from the nonhumidified educational spaces. SGH assisted the architect in developing details and evaluating constructability for the addition’s facade. We helped them design cladding anchorage to support the heavy terra-cotta and accommodate offsets between backup wall surface and the window openings.
